The Actor’s Workout with Lance Smith presented by The Maile School

 What is the Actor’s Workout?

The Actor’s Workout is a two hour class dedicated to actor training through an ongoing series of exercises and techniques. Each class is unique and will explore different areas of an actor’s ability.Actors workout

The Workout is broken into two individual hours. The first hour is The Gym. It’s about exercising the different “muscles” of emotion and reaction. We’ll examine the human machine at all levels in order to gain better control over the actor’s instrument.

________________________________________

actors workout 2The second hour is The Lab. Here, we’ll apply many of the techniques discovered and taught in The Gym. Through scene work selected by the staff (as well as suggestions and requests by students with ongoing work) The Lab will be an opportunity for actors to engage in their newly found craft.

The purpose behind The Actor’s Workout, presented by The Maile School, is for new and emerging talent, as well as seasoned professionals, to better realize their hard work and commitment to acting and performing. The more an actor is willing to put in, the more they will discover in return.

In order to ensure a higher standard of practice class size will be no more than 14. Requirements for entrance into The Actor’s Workout will be based on experience. All applicants to the program will need to have attended one of the introductory Workout Workshops or completed any one of The Maile School courses.

About Instructor Lance SmithLance-Smith-Maile-School2

Lance Smith is most widely known as the “Voice of CMT”. A Nashville native, Smith spent nearly a decade hosting a variety of programs for Country Music Television, most notably CMT’s Top 20 Countdown.  Aside from counting videos each week, Lance also interviewed many of today’s biggest stars.  During his time on the MTV Network Smith also found himself acting on the big screen in comedies like Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector and Delta Farce.  Continuing his television hosting career, Lance hosted season one of the Weather Channel’s Weathering Disaster before landing at the anchor desk of the morning infotainment show The Daily Buzz.

Frequently Asked Questions…

Is this “The Meisner” technique?

– Much of what is taught in The Actor’s Workout does originate from the basic core teachings of Sanford Meisner. However, because this is an ongoing class (something Meisner didn’t quite approve) much of what we teach is a medley of technique in the craft of acting, stretching from Stanislavski to Strasberg to Adler to Hagen to Meisner and more.

Is there an age minimum?

– Yes. We teach ages 15 to 115 and are very particular about the teens and young adults in the class. Sometimes the materials studied can have very adult themes and language. It is a reality of the entertainment industry and the work therein. We make sure parents are made especially aware of the work we study as well as any kind of physical action taking place in the classroom.

How much will I read/perform in each class?

– The amount of practice you get depends on the exercises. However, you will work more than just twice on most occasions, especially in The Gym portion of The Actor’s Workout. Our goal is to get you moving and being as much as possible. We’re not here to lecture. We’re here to DO!

What if I have no experience?

– Give us a call or email. We’ll set up an interview or an audition. Acceptance into The Actor’s Workout is based purely on a grasp of the subject or at the very least a sense of self-awareness.

Who are the instructors?

– The Actor’s Workout is primarily coached and operated by Lance Smith, a television hosting and acting veteran. Other acting instructors through The Maile School will also be available for coaching.
