Improvisation Workshop for Kids & Teens at The Maile School

Improvisation Workshop for Kids & Teens at The Maile School

Hey there!  Do you know where your funny bone is?  Are you sure that you even have one?  Improvisation can help you answer those questions!

Have you seen Whose Line Is It Anyway or been to a Comedy show and wondered how they come up with funny things so quickly, right off the top of their heads?

It’s Improv!

Improvisation is the art of composing, uttering, executing or arranging anything without previous preparation, in the moment.

Learning Improv and Improvisational games can be a very useful tool in your acting, auditioning, public speaking or as a means of overcoming shyness.

Improv is fun!  Improv is exciting!  And improv is the subject of the next big workshop at The Maile School!

Taught by The Maile School’s own Jim Braswell, who studied at the Sak Comedy Lab with and under Whose Line’s Wayne Brady.  Jim’s 20+ years in the Entertainment Industry includes being a member of the Disney Comedy Troupe; Streetmosphere/Citizen of Hollywood and as an Audience Warm Up for various Disney Attractions and television shows taped at Disney. Victoria, who has studied teen acting with Jim, her mom says “She completed her 12 week acting program at The Maile School and has become his biggest fan. She was so excited to hear he is with Brevard Talent Group agency too.”

Jim welcomes the chance to help you find your “funny”!  Let’s tap into those creative juices and see what flows.  And if you walk away having learned very little you won’t walk away not having fun!  This workshop promises to be fun and exciting for beginners or intermediates. The workshop is this Saturday, February 11th from 3:30pm to 7:30pm with parents coming back the last 30 minutes to see the students perform an improv showcase.

Confidence for Teenagers

         news

                          Confidence for Teenagers

confidence-blog-maile-schoolConfidence is related to your self-esteem, which is feeling good about yourself and feeling that you’re a worthwhile person. But having high self-esteem doesn’t mean you always feel confident.

Building confidence in teenagers helps them make safe and informed decisions. Confident teenagers can avoid people and situations that aren’t right for them, and to find those that are.

If a teen is confident, she is more likely to be more friendly, assertive, positive, engaged, enthusiastic and persistent.

For example, a confident teenage girl whose friend is being mean to her might be upset for a little while. But then she might realize that she can come back from the sadness she is feeling and focus more on the positive things she has going on in her life. On the other hand, a girl who feels less confident in herself will be more upset, sad, withdrawn or even feel that it was all her fault.

Teenagers with low self-esteem and confidence are less likely to be involved in activities or try new things. They are more likely to hold back in class, be closed off and might be more willing to give in to peer pressure. When a teen lacks confidence, she might expect to fail at things and not even try at all.

Since 1982 The Maile School has been offering a special Image & Confidence Development program just for teen girls focusing on building self-esteem. The topics covered in this program are first impressions, building confidence, leadership skills, etiquette, skin care, make up, hair design, posture, poise, public speaking, body language, and communication skills. Taught by a variety of industry professionals who teach in their area of expertise.

The program is 10 weeks on Saturday mornings from 10am to 1pm. The next available session is beginning this Saturday January 14th.

Aubrey “Storms” Sharknado

Maile Acting School Graduate Aubrey PeeplesActing graduate and Performing Troop member Aubrey Peeples

She first fell in love with acting at the age of 3 as a captivated audience member watching her first play at The Civic Theatre. When she turned 5, she was in her first play and hasn’t stopped since. She grew up performing in both community and professional musicals, singing at several venues including the National anthem for the Orlando Magic, and was a proud Thespian member.

In 2007 she turned to film and had her first role in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Jr. In high school she started making short trips to Los Angeles each year to break into that market as well as continuing to work in the Southeast, building her resume with several guest-starring and co-starring roles in Drop Dead Diva, Charlie’s Angels, Burn Notice, Austin & Ally, and a recurring role on Necessary Roughness as well as several commercials.

After Graduation

After graduating high school as Valedictorian and getting accepted to universities such as Harvard, Columbia, UCLA, Northwestern and the University of Michigan, she decided to take a year off and move to LA to pursue her passion for acting. The universe blessed her with steady work with roles in Grey’s Anatomy, Lifetime movie The Good Mother, the CW pilot Star-Crossed, and the now cult hit Sharknado, in which she played Claudia, the daughter of Tara Reid and Ian Ziering. She recently filmed the movie Tokarev starring Nicolas Cage which will premiere in 2014.

In her down time, she became a tutor and volunteered weekly at a food bank. She also published her first article in TYA Today, and helped produceSharknado and starred in a short film A Conversation: Anne Frank Meets God. As her gap year in LA was coming to an end, she was packing up her apartment to head to college when she got the call she booked a large recurring role playing newcomer Layla Grant on ABC’s Nashville. Two days later, she was on a flight to Nashville to start shooting. She is thrilled to be involved with such a great group of people getting to both act and sing. Academics is still a high priority and Aubrey plans to accomplish those goals as well one day, but for now she is enjoying the ride! Way to go Aubrey!
